Pennsylvania Dutch Chocolate Chip Cookies
A unique cookie recipe thats been in my family for generations. These cookies have a crisp and chewy texture, very similar to cookies found in old German bakeries.
Dan: Dan
Recipe type: Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2¼ cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1.5 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
Instructions
- Preheat a home oven to 350* or a convection oven to 325*
- Whisk in a bowl the flour, salt and baking powder
- In your mixer bowl, beat the butter for a few seconds until is creamy
- Add the sugars and cream for about a minute, mixture will look sandy
- Add one egg and vanilla extract and cream to combine
- Scrape bowl, add second egg and beat
- Add the flour, mix for a moment then add the chips
- Mix a few seconds longer then combine any remaining flour with a spatula
- Scoop copies onto a parchment lined sheet and bake for 12-18 minutes, until golden brown on the edges
Notes
Unlike many of our cookie recipes, these cookies can be baked immediately after mixing. No chilling of the dough is required.

Two questions:
1) How much does a stick of butter weigh in grams? Is it 113 g as I remember from way back when?
2) What kind of baking powder is used, single or double acting?
You Are correct! Also- I use double acting- but I don’t see why single acting wouldn’t work as long as you are baking your batter right away.
Happy Baking!
I would make this if I understood the measurements. Wish they were in cups.
Hi Joyce! I just converted to cups. I hope you get to try the recipe!
